My very busy day at work was interrupted by a phone call from daycare saying that Brodie was acting very fussy all day (which is very atypical of him) and running a low fever. Brodie is teething right now and has been having difficulty with it this week and last time he cut a tooth he ran a low grade fever, so I assumed this was the problem and they said they would call back if it got worse or I needed to come get him. Within a half an hour I got another call. Brodie's fever was steadily increasing and was over 101 (which is when they send them home) and he was seeming increasingly more ill. So I wrapped up my day at work and coordinated with Damon in order to get the car to pick Brodie up (of course this is the day I don't have the car with the car seat). When I got there, Brodie looked miserable and was hot to the touch. He also seemed to be struggling to breath -instead of breathing or even wheezing he was grunting.
I decided at this point to go ahead and call the doctor to see if they had any room to squeeze me in (it was 4:10 at this point). Luckily they were able to and I headed right over. When we got there they listened to his lungs (definitely congested) and tested his oxygen level (low). Due to the low oxygen level they immediately did a nebulizer treatment to help open his lungs and make it easier for him to breathe and then sent us for a chest xray - luckily the imaging place was in the same building and was able to squeeze us in too! Being that I am pregnant I couldn't be in the same room as Brodie when he had the x-rays done - and he was put in this little contraption to hold him still - he was crying so hard, it broke my heart. But, the xrays looked pretty good...no signs of pneumonia. The doctor said he had definite signs of an upper respiratory infection and although he wanted to monitor him because of the grunting, he felt comfortable with the results. They sent us home with a prescription for liquid steroids and a loaner nebulizer machine with a regiment of treatments to do throughout the night. We go back tomorrow at 10 am to recheck his lungs.
Tonight Brodie is worn out and seems to be sleeping well. He barely woke up for his first nebulizer treatment since bedtime. I hope he is doing much better in the morning. I hate to see him sick. Well I am off to bed now. At least for a few hours - it is going to be a long night.
Here is a picture of Brodie doing his first nebulizer treatment at home. The mask has an elephant face painted on - looks kind of creepy : /
